In January, in Ko\u0161ice, we confirmed our participation in an international consortium and signed a framework agreement for the JARMIL EPC-2K project \u2013 formally marking our entry into the aerospace sector. Building on our experience from technically demanding projects, we are now moving into an environment where requirements for precision, reliability, and qualification process are even higher.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is JARMIL EPC-2K<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The JARMIL EPC-2K project is <\/span><b>a development programme focused on a rocket propulsion system.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, it is not limited to design alone \u2013 it covers the entire process, from engineering design and numerical simulations to experimental validation and systems engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the project, we are involved across the full development cycle, while also <\/span><b>entering the European space ecosystem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where technological know-how and credibility for future international collaboration are continuously developed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For AUREL and LENAM, the project is strategically important as it allows us to transfer advanced competencies into the aerospace segment<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Radek N\u011bme\u010dek, Aerospace Activities Coordinator at AUREL.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are not doing this alone<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rocket engine development relies on collaboration between multiple partners. That is why we are part of a consortium in which each partner has a clearly defined role. <\/span><b>The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Ko\u0161ice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (TUKE), together with the Prototyping and Innovation Centre (PaIC), provides strong research and manufacturing capabilities, as well as experience from projects of the European Space Agency. These capabilities are also reflected in ongoing collaborations \u2013 TUKE is currently involved in an ESA project focused on air decontamination, running since February 2026, with AUREL and LENAM participating as subcontractors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stellar Exploration and Inpraise Systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contribute expertise in space applications and systems design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurelcz.eu\/en\/aurel-czech-company-shaping-the-future-of-european-automotive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AUREL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and LENAM, we primarily bring <\/span><b>experience in numerical simulations, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurelcz.eu\/en\/virtual-modelling-and-cae-analyses-accelerate-development-and-reduce-costs\/\"><b>virtual development<\/b><\/a><b>, and testing of technically demanding systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This integration of research, development, and practical application forms a strong foundation for the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Our role<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to ensure that the design works even before the first physical prototype is created. Specifically, we focus on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis of mechanical and thermal loads,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assessment of structural integrity,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">validation of key engine components under critical operating conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allows us <\/span><b>to identify weak points early, refine the design, and reduce the risk of issues emerging only during testing.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our goal is not only to achieve a functional design, but one that is robust, verifiable, and ready for further qualification steps<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d explains Radek N\u011bme\u010dek.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A different approach to propulsion systems<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most exciting aspects of the project is its <\/span><b>innovative approach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It explores the use of electrically driven positive displacement pumps \u2013 specifically external gear pumps \u2013 within a rocket propulsion system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This opens up new possibilities for designing rocket cycles and may have a significant impact on system performance and overall efficiency. Our current task is to verify whether this concept is viable \u2013 first through simulations, and later through real-world testing.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t<style>\r\n remain similar to those in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurelcz.eu\/en\/automotive-standards-are-not-a-necessary-evil-but-a-tool-for-improvement-says-jan-sommer-from-aurel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the automotive industry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013<\/span><b>precision, quality, and traceability. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference lies in the level of formalisation and the strictness of requirements. Within the European Space Agency environment, we follow ECSS standards, which precisely define documentation, validation processes, and quality management requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, aerospace introduces <\/span><b>a completely different level of safety requirements.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rocket systems require careful handling of propellants, protection of personnel during testing, and stricter control of critical components. It is not enough for a system to function \u2013 it must be demonstrably safe and repeatable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, we are not entering this environment from scratch. The Ko\u0161ice team has <\/span><b>experience in the design, manufacturing, and testing of smaller rocket engines <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and has already contributed to earlier phases of the JARMIL project. They also bring strong expertise in mechanical system design and gear mechanisms, which are essential for pumping systems. Combined with the manufacturing and metrology capabilities of PaIC, this provides a solid foundation for launching the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JARMIL EPC-2K as a long-term opportunity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is <\/span><b>applying for support under the 4th RPA call of the European Space Agency programme,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which supports the development of new space technologies. At the same time, we see it as a long-term technological investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if JARMIL were not selected, we plan to continue through alternative pathways \u2013 whether within other European programmes or through a technological demonstrator that will progressively validate the key principles of the proposed solution. Our main objective is to advance the project to a stage where it is technically validated and ready for further development. A key milestone will therefore be <\/span><b>the successful validation of the new technological concept<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will determine all subsequent steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A step towards more advanced projects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For us, aerospace is not just an extension of existing activities. Over time, it has the potential to become <\/span><b>a standalone technological domain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> focused on the development and testing of propulsion systems \u2013 with the future possibility of establishing a <\/span><b>dedicated specialised laboratory.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, <\/span><b>experience gained in aerospace will feed back into automotive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other industrial projects. It will allow us to further improve precision, quality, and our overall approach to development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The JARMIL EPC-2K project is therefore not just a specific contract \u2013 it represents a step towards managing more technologically advanced development and working on projects with higher added value.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year at AUREL, we are opening an entirely new technological chapter.
